Motor Racing Commentator

Greg Rust is Australia’s most versatile motor racing commentator and the front man for ONE's coverage of Formula One and MotoGP.

Born into a family with a genuine love for all forms of the sport he was a regular at the Sydney Showground Speedway before he could even walk. In his late teens and early 20’s Rust enjoyed some class wins as a driver in Rally Sprints and Khana-Crosses but his passion is kart racing and Greg still competes whenever he gets the chance. In recent years he’s tackled the 12-hour 4-stroke Enduro at Eastern Creek and won the event in 2003 with kart aces Troy Hunt and Tim Craig.

Rust has driven many race cars for story research including:

  • Informal V8 Supercar test with Paul Morris Motorsport (Holden).
  • Informal V8 Supercar test with Paul Dumbrell (Holden Commodore).
  • Informal V8 Supercar test with the Holden Racing Team (PR2)
  • Informal V8 Supercar test with Brad Jones Racing (Holden).
  • Aussie Racing Cars tests & racing at Winton and Oran Park Raceway.
  • Toyota Racing Series open wheeler at Oran Park.
  • Speedcar/Midget Parramatta Speedway, Sydney.
  • Formula Ford – Norwell Driver Training Centre, Gold Coast.

The skills learned during amateur competition still serve him well but Rust realised early on that his ability behind the wheel didn’t match the speed of his mouth or his journalistic capabilities. Trained at the Australian Film Television and Radio school and by voiceover great Max Rowley, it’s behind the microphone that Rust has really excelled.

He cut his teeth as a Sprint Kart commentator and earned a big break calling the televised support races at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in 1996. Rust joined Ten's V8 Supercar commentary team two years later and played an integral part in the network's Logie Award Winning Broadcasts. His pit reporting is world class and for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and Gold Coast Indy carnival he was ensconced in pit lane.

Other journalistic and commentary credits include:

  • 3 years with the Macquarie Radio Network as a newsreader and sport reporter for Sydney stations 2GB and 2CH.
  • Reporting and presenting for Ten’s Sports Tonight program.
  • Studio host for world’s greatest motor race – the Indianapolis 500.
  • Host of the RedBull Air Race World Series in 2006 & '07.
  • Pool deck interviews for One's live coverage of the Aust. Swimming Championships.
  • Columnist for Motor magazine and Motor Racing Australia.
  • Presenter and lead commentator of V8 Supercars airing on channel Ten and Fox.

Rusty is an obvious tag but his friend and colleague, the late Barry Sheene, also coined the nickname ‘Thruster’ (V8 champ Russell Ingall was already called Rusty by most people in the paddock) and it stuck.

In 2009 Greg is also hosting ONE's coverage of the Australian Rally Championship, the forth coming World Rally Championship round in NSW. He also commentates the Australian Superbike Championship with good friend Daryl Beattie.

Greg will be heavily involved in the forthcoming Australian Formula One Grand Prix coverage.
